""What is STEAM?

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

What is the Richland STEAM program?

Our STEAM program is a day of hands on learning in each of the STEAM areas. Once a month each grade will alter the traditional class schedule and instead rotate to different classes to engage in learning experiences that are not usually possible in the daily classroom. These experiences follow the standards for each grade level.

How do we have STEAM at Richland?

Richland has STEAM thanks to community support and volunteers. The funding for Richland STEAM is provided by the Richland FOR Club and the Richland Alumni Association. In addition, Richland has received grants from ASML (parent company of local San Diego company Cymer), Lowe's of Carlsbad and Thermo Fisher Scientific.  Richland STEAM curriculum aligns with the new NGSS Standards.

What is NGSS?

NGSS stands for Next Generation Science Standards. These standards are cross-cutting standards that span all disciplines. It is the new benchmark for science education. These standards were adopted by the State Board of Education on September 4, 2013.

What is One and Done?

Richland STEAM program is a volunteer run program!  Hands on learning experiences in an elementary school takes many hands to make the day a success. This program is thriving because of parents and community members. The program is designed with the working parent in mind.

Each Richland family is asked to donate one full day of time. Most families have an adult use one vacation day from work and spend the day helping a scheduled Richland STEAM day. Scheduled STEAM Dates will be listed and sign-up sheets available at Back to School Night.

A sign-up sheet is also located online using the below link and on the Quick Links section on the left hand column of this page for quick reference.

Do I have to know about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts or Mathematics to help?

No experience is needed. The teachers are in the classroom to help and guide volunteers.

Do you need STEM industry professionals to help?

Yes. Some of the student's favorite lessons are ones that an adult can relate real career experience to the topic being studied.
